Do you know how everybody has a friend of a friend who works in a great restaurant? Well I have a friend of a friend who works at Salad King. Salad King is a popular thai restaurant located on Yonge street just across from Ryerson. I've only been there a few times but the sevice is always great, the atmosphere bustling, and the food mouthwatering.
This time I ordered the Pattaya Chicken. The dish consists of breaded chicken cut into slices, thinly sliced red peppers, onions and carrots, and fresh pieces of thyme. It is served in a honey and lime chili sauce and comes with steamed white rice.
My goodness, this place has great food. The breading on the chicken was thin and crispy while the chicken itself was tender and juicy. The sliced vegetables made a nice medley but the best thing about this dish was the sauce. You can smell the sweet and faintly soicy aroma as the server places it down. When you first dip a piece of chicken in it the light tang of the lime, the sweetness of the honey and the heat of the chili creates a brilliant rainbow to frame the perfectly cooked chicken. The sauce does get spicier as you get further into the dish so save a little more of the steamed rice for the end to soak it up.
The menu also has a scale on the right hand side. This scale goes from one chili to twenty chilis. This a grading system for how much extra spice you would like added to your dish. I myself haven't gone above four chilis yet and I would recommend those unused to spice to start at one and work their way up.
Now I didn't order dessert this time, but only because there was a Marble Slab Creamery just a few doors down. The whole thing cost me $9.75 plus tip which is well worth it. I hope you get a chance to enjoy this marvelous restaurant if you're ever in dowmtown Toronto at Yonge and Dundas.
